Getting a list of all the files name in a folder

Postby mhudon » Thu Jul 31, 2014 11:42 am

Hello,

A question for you my friends. Is there a way to get a list of the names of all the files contained in a folder and it's sub folder :| ? I really just need the names of the files, nothing else :scout: Any suggestions?

I forgot to say why I need this. I have to build a list of the 3142 pictures downloaded from a website and used in some of our evil creations. I really don,t feel like asking anyone to open each folder and copy the names in an Excel Sheet. Thanks!

Start Menu -> Run -> cmd
cd <the directory path>
eg: cd "C:\Program Files\Common Files"
dir /a/s > dir_listing.txt

I've used the Windows version of Norton Commander, Total Commander. Thanks for the suggestions :D

You can open up windows explorer and in the top right hand corner (search box) type the name of the root folder followed by *.*, so d:\somelocation\*.* will list all of the files. You can then start tweaking it with more complex search keywords.

Haven't figured out how to save the output tho.

adding to Tiggerz solution:

1) Open up Wnidows Explorer
2) Go to the folder you want to get listing for
3) Type * (or maybe *.*) in the Search field (top-right corner)
4) Select All
5) Shift-right-click
6) Copy as path - This will get you the list of files and folders with full path.
7) Paste in Excel
8) Sort - this will ensure files and folders are arranged as per their path instead of folders first and files randomly arranged.
9) Find and Replace - If you don't want the full path but just from the folder. (if replace "C:\Xyz\folder" with "folder")

done.
