Looking for a Z87 motherboard that supports 3-way SLI

Postby Leprekaun » Tue Feb 25, 2014 10:22 am

Hi all. Unfortunately, during the removal of my CPU from my motherboard, I found that the pins on the motherboard were bent and damaged. I don't know how it happened. Perhaps the weight from my Scythe Mugen 3 cooler applied too much pressure on the pins. Regardless, the pins on the motherboard seem to be badly damaged. So now, I'm looking for a replacement motherboard.

Initially, when I got the motherboard, I was looking for a board that supports 2-way SLI (future proof), but after some research, I realised that 2-way SLI may introduce input lag and microstutter which is a critical element for me since I play a lot of driving simulators and input lag is an absolute no! But with 3-way SLI, this eliminates the problem.

So now, I'm looking for a board that supports at least 3-way SLI. Since Gigabyte and Asus are the top brands (or at least, the brands that I know of), preferably, I'd like to go for one of those 2 brands. I tried looking on Asus and Gigabyte websites and they're not entirely clear about which boards support 3-way SLI since they state "Quad-GPU SLI" which I've learnt could mean that you could pair 2x GTX 690s (which each card in itself is 2x GTX 680s) but since I have a GTX 670, I am looking for the option to allow me to install 3x GTX 670s in future. I am not intent on getting 2x GTX 670s right now but maybe in a few years, I will consider doing it to keep up with new releases and when the GTX 8xx or GTX 9xx series is out, whereby the GTX 670 will be a lot cheaper.

So, yeah, what is the cheapest Asus/Gigabyte Z87 board I can get that supports 3-way SLI? Thanks.

Hello,

Best available PCIE config available if you want to go three way SLI on a mainstream board is PCIE x8/x4/x4. Bandwidth is limited, but if you think this would do the job, choose the board that best fit your needs in the following search made on Newegg's website:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007626+600438202+600176036+600239779+600238949&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20&Page=1

My 2 picks, feature and quality wise:
Asus:http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131992
Giga: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128593

For a 16/x8/x8 config, this would cost more but would be one hell of a solution:
Asus: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131998 :licks:

In a few years a single videocard may outperform your 3-way GTX-670 SLI setup..

Indeed, we're almost there

I would like to had that compatibility wise, I prefer 100% compatibility of a single strong graphic card to slightly stronger SLI or CFX set-up. I've replaced my 7970 CFX set-up by a single R9 290x and don't regret doing so one bit.

Another thing to take into account is the energy consumption of multi GPU set-ups. If adding a second or third card forces you to change your PSU for a stronger one, this upgrade path might not be a "budget" one anymore. This will also have an impact on the electrical bills.

Taking all of this into account, selling the GTX 670 to replace it by a GTX 780 looks like a pretty good option.

Leprekaun, are you SURE your cpu pins on your mobo socket are "bent and damaged"?

Here is a pic of an Asus Socket 1150 mobo socket, the pins are supposed to look like this:

Did you try putting your cpu back in the mobo to see if it would boot??

Such a pretty cpu socket :licks: Just looking at this makes me think about my credit card and all the pretty things I can order using it.

Removing the pins from the cpu was a smart move methink. It's far easier to drop a cpu than to drop a mobo!

Just out of curiosity where did you hear that 2-way SLI introduces input lag and micro stutter where as 3-way eliminates it? I've had X-fire and SLI setups with 2 cards for about 4 years and never experienced microstutter or input lag. I think its more a matter of keeping your drivers up to date, latest SLi and X-fire profiles, and games updated and you shouldn't have any trouble. Not every game has profiles for SLI and X-fire and even the newest one's sometimes take a while for a profile to come out. So sometimes you are stuck with a doubly expensive graphics adapter that performs like a single card. That is one down side.

it happened only once... I dropped the cpu when the owner reached for her cellphone in her handbag... she had such a cleavage  :licks: ... just couldn't control meself anymore :?

First and last time I experience such a failure... I end up marrying her!

Ha ha ha!! A sad story ( dropping cpu ) with a happy ending!! ( getting married ) 8) :D

While I don't like to hear about any cpu being dropped, in this case it seems it was worth it!

That reminds me of the Mariah Carey video where the geek squad looking guy comes to fix her computer and he ends up day dreaming about frolicking around with her!

Apparently in a pole recently 10 percent of Americans think HTML is an STD. Not sure what that has to do with this thread but I figured it was important information to get out there

Consequently the one's that know what HTML stands for may not have to worry about obtaining an STD at least until Newegg has them back in stock again.
