[Solved] sometimes my computer can't be turn on

Postby sevendp » Wed Jan 29, 2014 1:08 am

hi guys
strange thing happen to my computer last 2 weeks ...
when i press power button to turn on the computer (after switch on PSU's power button first).... sometimes it can't be turn on ....
no sign of moving fan etc ... i checked the power cable was ok ... it can turn on the monitor ....
i must take off the power cable from the psu several time while turn off and on again PSU's power button several times .... more than 10 times
then suddenly my computer can be turn on again ....
FYI my computer & monitor connected to an UPS Prolink 600VA.
and i rarely turn on my computer for last 2-3 months .... maybe only 2-3 times a week

my PSU was Acbel 420W .... bought on January 2011 .... 3 years already showing it's age ?
current rig:
E5400@3.4GHz
Gigabyte GA-P41-ES3G
Sapphire 7790 Dual-X
2 SATA HDD
DVDRW Pioneer

please give me an enlightenment
many thanks!

That sounds exactly like a dying PSU. I've had maybe 4 machines do the exact same thing. The first few I spent time diagnosing, by the last one, I was like, yup, bad PSU!

Yeah, sounds like the PSU may have been bad from the start, your system just didn´t push it...

Still, if the part about removing/plugging in the psu cable repeatedly like that is what makes a difference, then there may be something physically loose or glitchy inside the PSU, which means BEWARE and take CAUTION!

Don´t let it sit powered on somewhere out of sight until you know what´s wrong, as there is some risk that it could be a firehazard.
Not a huge risk but again, if you get a difference from something that potentially pushes things around, glitchy or loose is possible, and if it glitches the wrong way, you get sparkly.
This has been an objective and completely impartial message from the propaganda bureau of DIREWOLF75. Thank you for reading. Have a nice day.

Hi sevendp,

I'm also suspecting your PSU. If I'm not wrong, the Acbel 420W's got a dual rail 12v power output providing roughly 155w per rails each. Your graphic card's drawing around 95w at load (AMD recommends a 500w psu minimum), plus the overclocked cpu, the other components, the aging... yep.

I've estimated the power consumption of your PC to approximatly 386w at load using http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine. Thats close to the psu's limit. Add a little aging to these capacitors and voilà, your psu's at it's limit!

Most likely it is a failing psu as others have said.

However, I have had the same symptoms with a cheap Gigabyte G41 chipset mobo that only lasted me a year before it failed on me, and behaved exactly the way you described above. I had ( and still have ) a brand new Antec 520W HCG psu at the time so the problem was not the psu, it was the mobo...

Anyways, to test whether psu or mobo problem, buy or borrow a new psu and see if problem goes away. If it does not, then buy new mobo ( exchange psu for new mobo if budget is tight ). Best of luck!

Thanks fuzz, DIREWOLF75, mhudon and HT for the enlightenment ...
last night same thing happened again ... then when i can turn it on and do some work for an hour .... i shutdown then i try to push the power button and my computer can be turn on with only one touch on power button ....
seems it can be turn on easily when PSU/mobo is still warm
LOL ....

i will try to borrow a PSU then try it tomorrow (chinese new year holiday here, got 3 days off-work along with saturday and sunday) i will have enough time to check my computer :)
check for broken capacitor on mobo & PSU .. put processor back to normal clock ....
i will try to clean up from dust .... spray contact cleaner on mobo ,and clean the gold pin of memory & video card with pencil eraser .... re-seat all cable ...
then try to power on the computer with only mobo + cpu .... if can be turn on then put the ram, vga card etc one by one ....
what else i missed ?
wish me luck guys ...

if my mobo is broken ... i will thinking of cheap upgrade ...
how about Socket 1150 upgrade:
Asrock H81M-HDS or ECS H81H3-M4
Pentium G3220 3.0 Ghz Cache 3 MB (BOX)
1x4GB DDR3 PC12800 memory for about 200 US$ ?

or stick with Socket 1155 ?
same price which one got more performance ? i would think twice about electric bill .... so i would really prefer low wattage component...

buy cheap processor socket 1150/1155, then someday when i want to upgrade and have money it can be upgrade to core i3 or i5 right ?
from E5400@3.4GHz to G3220 still got performance jump right ?
but i should ask my wife first :P

if i found only PSU is broken then i will buy new 500W PSU as that is minimum requirement for my video card (budget only 50 US$ i think)
Antec VP-550 550W
FSP Hexa 500w 80+
FSP Supersonic 550W
Raidmax RX-500AF 80+ Bronze 500W
Super Flower SF-500P12A 500W
Seasonic ECO-500 500W - 85

:)

thanks guys ....

Fix one thing at a time, lest you break something else! Swap the power supply first an see if it works. Then clean out the dust bunnies and remove one component, clean it if you think it is necessary, then put it back. Otherwise if it doesn't boot and you've pulled it all to pieces, its harder to figure out what the problem part was.

Yeah, start with a new power supply as that is the easiest to replace...

Of the power supplies you listed:

Seasonic is probably the best brand and also the most expensive.
Antec is fairly decent ( and usually very affordable , recommended ).
Raidmax is not the "best" brand of psu and personally I would avoid it.
FSP is good and if the price is right, recommended.
Super Flower is a very good brand and if price is nice also recommended.

Let your wallet decide... I would go with any of the psu's you listed except the RaidMax brand tbh, happy shopping!

If it turns out that the mobo is faulty then we can give you further advice at that point, but for now , one thing at a time as Fuzz says, and that means psu... chances are very good that it is a faulty psu from the conditions you are describing.

Yeah, I noticed that too... you chose well! :D

The Xbox One console uses the "equivalent" of an "HD 7790" card in it too ( SOC but same number of shaders, ROPS, etc etc. as the 7790 , identical performance overall to your card ). So your card should last you a while for gaming methinks, at least midrange gaming of course... enjoy! :)

This sounds like a capacitor issue inside the PSU.

Console is made for games so I expect it to perform better then an equivalent card in a PC.

I'm not sure that PS is going to work....CPU and video card are going to demand the most power, everything else is just 10's of watts. You can give it a try.

already tried change psu last night.....
but new psu do not have 6pin cable for video card. and only got sata power connector (i still got 1 ide hdd & 1 ide dvdrw).... so i just only connect psu to mobo 24 & 4 pin and 1 sata hdd. when i touch the power button it can be turn on with 1 touch.
so that was broken psu? already check the warranty label..... 4 years old psu.....
is it danger if i still use this old psu for a few days? i will order new psu on monday.... ask my supplier which brand he have (except raidmax) :)
thanks.
