Massive price drop on GTX 780

Postby mhudon » Wed Oct 30, 2013 12:39 pm

The GTX 780 can now be bought for as low as $510. Most online hardware providers have adjusted their prices. Nvidia also includes 3 games via the NVIDIA GIFT Holiday Bundle.

Frankly speaking, such a massive and sudden price drop (plus the game bundle) makes it feel like a betrayal for all of those who bought their cards in the last weeks.

I often smiled when reading Linuxlowdown premonitions about Nvidia's disappearance; today I'm not smiling. I've own and installed countless Nvidia cards in the past, I used to be a real fan. Now I really wonder where will this kind of practise lead them.

Still, at $509... the hardware enthousiast in me begins to feel the call... :?

Well, they were hanging on a very brittle thread in the last few years because of their manufacturing contracts with TSMC coming up for renewal, and they were unlikely to keep all the tricks, but it seems they lucked out with most in the end.
TSMC doesn´t want them to stop being a customer or go bankrupt after all.

Still, at $509... the hardware enthousiast in me begins to feel the call...

*lol*
Waaaay too expensive for me to even consider it. My basic aim nowadays is essentially to get the most powerful card that can still run nicely with a passive cooling. So, the 100-200$ range.

Frankly speaking, such a massive and sudden price drop (plus the game bundle) makes it feel like a betrayal for all of those who bought their cards in the last weeks.

Totally.
This has been an objective and completely impartial message from the propaganda bureau of DIREWOLF75. Thank you for reading. Have a nice day.

I also concur. My next video card will be AMD for sure.

Nvidia's current actions are not so much an overall price drop as they are a reshuffling, GTX 780's price was lowered to make room for the upcoming 780 Ti (2 weeks apparently) that'll retail for $699.99 if rumors are true.

a price drop on GTX 780 was inevitable, don't blame Nvidia, thank AMD for offering R290X for $100 less and outperforming it by up to 20%+ with the latest drivers released a cppl days ago.

AMD tends to gradually lower pricing over time and clear out the channel if need in prep for new product which I guess is a positive.

either way I'm still in the R290X is better camp despite GTX 780's reduction, 290 is still quite a bit faster with an abundance of driver headroom to stretch that lead, when you consider the other extra's that come with it GTX 780 looks a little old in comparison but I'm still going to wait for 780 Ti if only to see if it forces more downward pressure on pricing.... an R290X for $50 to $100 less would look even more compelling.

HD 7870 is now $185 USD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814202025

and R9 270X ( same as HD 7870 but running faster memory ) is selling for $200 and up:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125476

These are fantastic midrange cards for around the $200 price range. As you go up in performance, you have to pay a lot more for smaller and smaller performance gains overall.

One advantage to rebadging old product lineup, the drivers work great cuz no new architecture to have to learn to write proper drivers for... so new R9 lineup shares same AMD driver as the old generation which is actually an advantage!!

Sapphire (11199-19-20G) Radeon HD 7870 OC 2GB GDDR5
- 1050 MHz Clock,
4800 MHz Memory

I know I can get one a bit cheaper online, but if buy this one locally from CC then no shipping charge, this one has a nice cooler on it and is a very good overclocker, has excellent reviews too... :D

Why spend an extra $5 on the equivalent R9 270X card when I can overclock the ram to the same 5600 Mhz ( or a bit higher if lucky ):

Memory speed is the only difference between those cards?
