Researchers finally crack realistic, real-time rendered hair in video games

Finally, future video games will have "realistic" hair... Lara will have super-realistic hair ( more volume, better defined ) in the next TR...can't wait! 8) :D

The leap to this new realistic hair will be the same leap that TressFX is to "regular" hair in TR! :

Pros and Cons of TressFX:

http://venturebeat.com/2013/03/07/the-p ... f-tressfx/

( TressFX is good in that video above, but its flaws are exposed...hair is too thin, weird ear-hair if you look at skin just in front of her ear, and when her hair "flips" in the wind at the very end of the video the color reverses ( negative ) for just an instant...distracting when it does that, and artificial-looking ( like shimmering effect, not good ) ). So while TressFX is a big leap forward in realistic hair for 3D/games, this new research is the "next leap" in ultra-realistic hair for 3D games... :D ).

Officially I am impress. How how much power do you need for that. Until some realy strong optimisations come in place I cannot believe you acn implement that into a game engine yet... I hope I am wrong.

It will be great to have realistic hair in video games. I hope they get it where it becomes common place soon for all games!

Hi Gracie!

Yes, realistic hair is just one more of the more difficult physics problems that are being solved lately for graphics/gaming... along with realistic water and smoke etc... I am guessing we are only another 1 or 2 generations away ( in both sw and hw ) from having "photo-realistic gaming" , where you cannot tell if it was filmed live, or was computer-generated... there is a dark side to that tech of course , but it is very exciting for the gaming world of course... I still remember playing "Pong" on my Atari game console hooked to my tv all those years ago...the industry has come quite a long way since then of course.

Happy Gaming! :D

Bring me photo realistic pr0n games, hehe!!

Also I would love some photo realistic racing games, but not arcade crap, real simulators. But I think we have to wait for another 10 years or more for a video card that will make the Titan look like a 3dFX Voodoo compared to todays video cards...

I was thinking more along the lines of simulating human beings and making fake videos of them, and passing them off as "real" videos that actually happened...think of a Rob Ford "Crack video" and his career is instantly finished, blammo!! That is what I was thinking when I said "the dark side of this tech"...

There will always be ways to determine if footage was real life, or simulated.
