VPN's iPad's Windows PC's

Postby diastole87 » Mon Mar 18, 2013 3:16 pm

hey ive got another one of my "crazy ideas" as all my helpdesk buddies call them.

the goal:
to stream media securely from my home PC to my ipad2 from anywhere that has an internet connection.

what ive looked at and tried:
App's and VPN's

no luck so far.

the ideal situation would be a vpn to my home pc that i could then use another app called AcePlayer to connect tothe samba server i have setup.

thoughts?

also i am looking for a free or less than 20 dollar one time payment if i must, not a recurring thing

Try Air Video app and see if that works:

http://gizmodo.com/5519283/how-to-acces ... om-an-ipad

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-vid ... 50020?mt=8

You don't need a proprietary app to playback the videos, Air Video handles nearly every format and only needs access to the raw video files wherever they are stored on your hard drive or connected NAS device...it will do the rest...

Only $3 one-time payment! Affordable... rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by 208 users so far...

Air Video has literally become part of my daily life. With my huge video collection, it's

Excellent - I use it every day

I should have reviewed Air Video ages ago. It's one of the few products I've ever used where I will give it the maximum rating with no hesitation.

Take with a grain of salt, but it does look okay on the surface.. ( have not used it myself ).

If you want full remote control of your Windows pc then you will need to install a VNC client of course, running on both your pc and your iPad... friend does this but I forget which VNC app he uses off the top of my head, we set it up a year ago and I can't remember exactly which one he is using, it does work good for him though...I think he paid $5 for it... can ask if you are interested...

Here is a FREE VPN ( both Windows and Mac OS support ), but you have to put up with ads in the free version, and it does slow down your connection of course, like any VPN does...

Good luck!!

Orb is good but Orb Live costs $10

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... live&hl=en

They have a free version but not sure what the drawbacks are:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... WVuZXciXQ..

Here is how to make it work on Apple products:

Only free to upload the first 7 GB, then it costs money after that...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyDrive

Since he wants to watch videos, he would have to pay, and also take long time to upload his entire collection...

Why not simply set up a website (at home) with restricted access?

One can install the Skydrive App (SkyDrive Pro I think it is called) on your home PC and access files from the ipad by a secure connection through the skydrive web site. I have not tried accessing a video through the browser to see if it works or what codec is supported though.

Don't know your upload speed, but you might register a website, place content on it from a server at home but with restricted access, maybe a password or something..
I know I am allowed to set up a website (i.e. server) @ home, or use a webpage/homepage (ior whatever they call it) provided by my ISP.
The only thing is: amount of data traffic is limited, but should suffice for personal use.

havent been having any luck with setting up the trial version of orb, it also seems like there is an empty space in the market for a product like the one i want, however one of the problems ive thought about is my at home upload speed, mostly if its capable of performing enough throughput to stream HD content.

Looks like the server is free, the apps cost $. Interesting, I've been struggling a bit with this myself. Wonder if the web browser player works on Wii U. Would like to use that....

Ah, I see... well it is then $3.25 USD under current conversion rates, not too expensive... :D

I suppose, but the way pricing goes between here and there its more likely to cost $2.50..

i am using the free version of the app, they do have a paid version for 1.99 for iPad and i don't know if its the same price for iPhone and i am too lazy to go grab mine :p .

yes its only 2 dollars but i am still looking for a way to use the app i have already paid for (aceplayer)

oplayer was my first try for a streaming app, i did not pay for it because both free and paid versions had AC3 audio disabled due to copyright infringement. aceplayer and emit are also have that codec disabled.

If you are still experimenting, I just set this up:

http://www.plexapp.com/mobile/index.php

Seams to work well, I'm using it on my Wii U, though haven't done to much testing. It looks like the phone apps cost money, but it works through a web browser as well, so you may not need them.
